Prove recovery with a representative copy
A backup matters only if authorized staff can locate, authenticate and restore it without damaging the source. Password reset must not be assumed to decrypt an older archive.
A lab administrator restores a representative milestone to an isolated test folder, verifies the manifest and sample files, records the software version and credentials used, then removes the test copy under the approved process.
Run the control in five steps
- 01Select a representative archive and isolated restore destination.
- 02Verify backup identity, age, custody and expected manifest.
- 03Restore using documented software and authorized credentials.
- 04Compare counts, hashes and representative file behavior.
- 05Record the result and remove the temporary restore copy.
Preserve the decision trail
Record archive ID, backup location, software/version, credential owner, test device, counts/hashes, failures, cleanup and next test date.
Stop and investigate when
- The only archive is used for the test.
- A password reset is treated as guaranteed decryption.
- No one owns the recovery credential or runbook.
State what encryption does not prove
Does not replace provider permissions, guaranteed backup, password recovery or enterprise identity management. It also does not determine inventorship, patentability, filing priority, evidentiary weight or disclosure authority. Obtain appropriate counsel.
Invention notebook security questions
How often should recovery be tested?
Set a cadence from change rate, risk and institutional policy.
Does a successful login prove recovery?
